Help Paying Utilities

Kentucky Weatherization program

The Kentucky Weatherization program can help low income families and households reduce their energy and utility bills. The resource is free to income qualified families, and on average it will lower home utility bills by up to 20% per year. So the average household in Kentucky may have a few hundred dollars per year on their expenses. Due to limited availability funding from the federal government, priority is being given to senior citizens, elderly, disabled and households with children.

Weatherization helps people save money on their utilities by providing a variety of conservation measures to low income individuals. Residents can get access to safety and health measures including repair or replacement of inefficient heating systems, adding attic insulation, improvements to stop air infiltration, and more. Educational programs and energy conservation tips are also provided to Kentucky households as part of weatherization. The objective of all of these services is to reduce the amount that people need to pay on their utility bills.

Homeowners and renters in Kentucky who sign up or enroll can benefit from a number of programs. First, an inspection will be performed by approved contractors. After that free inspection is performed, a work crew is then assigned to your residence and they will go to the home and performs the necessary work.

Improvements included from the Weatherization program can insulate ceilings, floors, water heaters, walls and duct work for heating systems. All of the resources are focused on helping people save money on their utility bills. Assistance can be offered to repair or replace heating equipment. Even gain safety measures such as installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as checks for carbon monoxide leaks and other health and safety issues.

Heating and cooling systems are also a focus. The Weatherization Works Program seeks to improve the energy efficiency of qualified low-income households by repairing, insulating, or installing energy efficient heating and cooling systems. Repairing or replacing doors and windows may be provided too.
